This past Saturday was my first day in a figure and portrait painting class at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria. I have been so anxious about it ever since I signed up for it 2 months ago! You can imagine my elation when it was finally time to start. I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit nervous and intimidated because I’m definitely out of practice and I was surrounded by so many other great painters in the class. But at the same time, I was just so happy to be there and learn. The teacher of the class is Danni Dawson, a very accomplished painter in her own right. I’m very thankful to be one of her students.
“If you let yourself get tied up in all the ‘rules’ you’ll just be too uptight. You have to be able to let yourself play.” -Danni Dawson on painting
It’s a pretty full class, so I had to get in where I fit in! I think I ended up with a lucky spot where I get to paint a profile (when just one side of the face is visible) of the lovely model. She is quite striking in person, and has a unique profile so I hope that I’m able to do it justice. I’ve never painted a profile before so we’ll see how it goes! So far I’m feeling a bit behind everyone else, but I’m confident that I’m off to a great start. I’ll post up pictures of my progress from week to week as the painting develops so stay tuned. Check out my photo album from the first class!
Homework for this week: A still-life of a flower or fruit, and a study on fabric folds. Yikes!
