Last weekend I attended the opening event for NEXT at the Corcoran, a group show of the school’s most recent graduates. It brought out many of Washington’s young, hip and artsy crowd, ready to mingle and enjoy some art. My lovely and surprisingly mature niece accompanied me to check out Corcoran’s new wave of amazing talent that’s entering the art scene bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
I love seeing student work because it feels so fresh and hungry. In school, and with the right support, an artist can feel free to experiment as well as experience several new viewpoints. At the NEXT show, similar topics may have been addressed but each execution was so unique. Maybe I’m a bit of a geek for this, but I was so exhilarated by it! Most of what I saw was outside of my scope of personal expression (hey, just trying to be honest), but it’s easy to appreciate it just the same. It’s amazing to see the endless capacity that we have as humans to create a visual to demonstrate a concept. There were definitely some risk-takers in the show, and I can’t help but admire and applaud them! I was able to capture just a taste of what the artists had to offer, and am so excited to share it with you. Check out the gallery, but I encourage you to go see the show for yourself and let me know what you think!
